Webinar Series 04

In a collaborative effort between the Society of Nepalese Engineers UK (SONEUK) and the Society of Transport Engineers Nepal (SOTEN), a high-level webinar was held to address the critical challenges and future opportunities within Nepal’s transit landscape. Titled “Urban Transportation: International Case Studies and Potential Opportunities in the Context of Nepal,” the three-hour session was led by transport expert Er. Prem Lamsal and moderated by Dr. Birendra Shrestha.
Addressing a Growing Crisis
The webinar highlighted several urgent issues currently plaguing Nepal's urban centers:
-
Road Safety: A staggering fatality rate of approximately 13 people per day.
-
Congestion: Rapidly increasing vehicle numbers leading to gridlock.
-
Environment: The deteriorating health and air quality resulting from heavy traffic emissions.
A Roadmap for Reform
Drawing on international case studies, Er. Lamsal and participating experts—including Er. Subodh Timilsina and Dr. Hare Ram Shrestha—proposed a series of strategic interventions:
-
Non-Motorized Transit: Prioritizing pedestrian infrastructure and the development of dedicated cycle lanes.
-
Public Transit Optimization: Enhancing efficiency through the implementation of dedicated bus lanes.
-
Infrastructure Upgrades: Redesigning road intersections to improve traffic flow.
-
The Safe System Approach: Making Road Safety Audits mandatory to proactively reduce accidents.
Collaborative Commitment
The session concluded with remarks from SOTEN President Dr. Hare Ram Shrestha, who praised the depth of the technical exchange. Er. Subodh Timilsina reaffirmed SONEUK’s commitment to championing these recommendations, aiming to bridge the gap between international best practices and Nepal's unique urban requirements. The event stood as a testament to the power of cross-border professional collaboration in solving national infrastructure challenges.
